He models. He acts. He raps. Who is he?
So Ji Sub!!!!
His most memorable role was Rough Cut, and Rough Cut was the epiphanic movie for him where he found his calling in acting. God, bless the director of Rough Cut, without which he won’t have So Ji Sub, the actor today.
He was so impressive in Rough Cut where he played a gangster named Gang Pae, coincidentally (or not) in Korean, his name meant Gangster. He played this role so convincingly well, the roles that came after are all in this genre. Remember The Company Man where he played a sophisticated killer. He is quite to pick up variety of other roles to break away from his tested and proven roles, he surprised us by playing doctor in Cain and Abel. A doctor that was betrayed by his brother and ended up losing his memory and was dramatically saved by a group of North Korean defectors in a desert of Mongolia. This is by far one of my favourite So Ji Sub drama. He is so good at saddling the different roles in this drama, the cheerful and pure doctor, the amnesiac refugee, the recovered-his-memory-but-pretend-to-get-a-revenge doctor. These different roles were convincingly and artfully played.
Just as this is not enough to seal his status as A list K actor, he moved on to play a war hero, he played General Lee Jang Woo in Road No 1 whose battalion singlehandedly defended Korea from the North and China’s invasion. This is another drama that saw him play a different genre within one drama. This is one very heart wrenching drama, the scene where he was forever separated from the love of his life. The emotions were so raw that I could not forget that vivid scene for awhile after watching it. I don’t think anyone can play General Lee Jang Woo like So Ji Sub did.
The other signature drama of So Ji Sub is Phantom. He played the stoic and broody investigator, Park Ki Young and Kim Woo Hyun. This is the first drama that he’s all suited up and looks absolutely suave. No dirty scenes but I guess he just couldn’t stay away from dying scenes. Even death followed him here.
I told myself that I won’t watch anymore of So Ji Sub dramas if he’s going to be cast in this genre again, it is just too painful to watch. Just then, it was announced he’s going to play Joo Joong Won, the obnoxious, senseless and petty Kingdom mall owner. It was his first comedic role. You can’t imagine the happiness and euphoria i felt at this news. Finally, my favourite Oppa can move away from the genre that he was so good at and thread the unchartered water. BUT….at the back of my mind, I was wondering if he can do comedy, and how would it turned out? I guess these worries were uncalled for, because his first comedic role was a riot. He was so hilarious in The Master’s Sun.
Since The Master’s Sun, he has released another album in commemoration of his years in the industry, hence the title of his album was 18 Years. It’s an amazing album, though it’s just a mini album, the 3 songs are carefully written, choreographed and rapped.
So Ji Sub is the first korean actor to have a road named after him, the entire 51KM. He was also made the ambassador of Gangwon-do where a So Ji Sub Gallery was set up as a remembrance of the work that he has done for the province. Not only that, there’s a train named after him as well. If this is not mind blowing I don’t know what is.
So Ji Sub is no ordinary K-celeb, he has tonnes of accolades up his sleeve but he never really shout about it. The most badass thing he did was wearing his dream on his muscled arm, yes, no kidding.
